Loving God with passionate worship and Scriptural Preaching, to the Glory of God.
Loving People by express our love for Christ, by showing love to our neighbors.
Serving the World by offering ourselves as servants to the nations to make Christ glorious.
Where we come from
The First Baptist Church of Geneva was organized by the Rev. George Cader Powell with ten members, as the Lake Harney Baptist Church, on August 15, 1875. He was the grandfather of Mrs. Helen Alderman and the great-grandfather of Mr. Cader Hart. Services were held in the homes of the members and no record was kept of regular conferences. Seventeen Articles of Faith were approved.
On July 25, 1880, plans were approved to build a Church House on land donated by R. DeBogary, located West of the Cemetery. In September 1880, the Rev. R. W. Lawton became the first called Pastor. The Church was dedicated on June 17, 1882. In 1884, W.B. Lassiter became the first ordained Deacon (he was Mrs. Helen Alderman's father).
Lake Harney Baptist Church was renamed Geneva Baptist Church on August 1, 1890. The clerks kept records of the conference from 1896 through 1901. The Church then became inactive.
The Church became active again in 1908 at the home of Rev. George H. Sieg. Rev. Sieg conducted services at the Cemetery Church once a month.
No minutes were available from 1914-1926. During this period, the Church building was located East of the old school building. This building was sold to the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Later it was consumed by fire.
A total of $1,384.00 was on hand January 2, 1927 for the purchase of the Women's Club House located North of Fellowship Hall. Services were held the later part of January 1927. The clubhouse burned that Friday night. We were without a building for services and eternally grateful to the Methodists for allowing us touse their buildings and to school officials for the use of their buildings.
The old Church House (FellowshipHall) was unfinished but we were able to move into it on July 17, 1927.
Over the years, it became very nicely furnished. Mr. and Mrs. Walker Prevatt loaned the Church $3,000 to establish a Pastorium. The ladies of the Churc has sumed the task of cleaning the building and gave the custodian pay to the fund. Part of the labor and materials was provided by members and friends. The educational buildings have been added as they were needed.
In 1981, Mrs. Dolly Braddy and Windel Braddy loaned the Church $6,500 interest free, to purchase 13.26 acres of land where the new Church now stands. Groundbreaking for the new Church was held July 15, 1984. The building is made up of 7,200 square feet, with seating for 300 in the sanctuary, a pre-school department, choirroom and offices. The chairman for the building committee was Estel Corns. The approximate cost of the building was projected to be $320,000.
Janie and Cader Hart made their contribution to the Church and the Community by leaving all their assets to the Lord as a gift to the First Baptist Church, Inc. Many other members have also made significant contributions to the church through the years. In the spring of 2005, construction began on a 10,000 sq ft educational facility North of the sanctuary. The building was completed and available in the spring of 2006.
This was made possible through time, talent, financial and prayer support from our members.
"To God be the Glory, Great Things He Hath Done..." for He has blessed the First Baptist Church of Geneva to walkin the paths of His Glory.
